Remembering Israk Mikraj

Do we realise that if Israk Mikraj never happened on Rejab 27th, we would have been performing more than five prayer times a day. In general, Israk Mikraj is a journey of our beloved Prophet Muhammad SAW to Sidratul Muntaha to meet Allah SWT as a command from Him to perform daily prayers of five times a day.

Through the phenomenal event arranged by Allah, it is seen as one of His divinities that we as human should acknowledge without questioning why. Allah also wants to remind all mankind His power is beyond ordinary that no human has the capability to imagine the truest power of the Almighty.

The event of Israk Mikraj is recited by Allah in the holy Quran, Surah Al-Israq verses 1 and 60:

“Glory be to Him, Who transported His Servant one night from the Masjid-i-Haram to the distant Temple, whose surroundings We have blessed, so that we might show him some of Our Sings:1 the fact is that He alone is All-Hearing and All-Seeing.” Surah Al-Isra’: 1

“And [remember, O Muhammad], when We told you, “Indeed, your Lord has encompassed the people.” And We did not make the sight which We showed you except as a trial for the people, as was the accursed tree [mentioned] in the Qur’an. And We threaten them, but it increases them not except in great transgression.” Surah Al-Isra’: 60

Apart from that, Israk Mikraj was also an event of substitution for the grief of Prophet Muhammad SAW, after he faced a multitude of trials, particularly the tremendous opposition in his dakwah efforts. Sadly, he was commanded to leave the township of Thaif.

Meanwhile, the loss of his relative, Abu Talib was also the cause of Muhammad’s grief and his uncle died in a state of disbelief to Allah SWT. In fact, the death of his beloved wife, Siti Khadijah Khuwailid further extended Muhammad’s grief.

In addition to the indication of the greatness of Allah SWT through the phenomenal event of Israk Mikraj, it was also concocted to enlighten the recognition of Muhammad as the final messenger of Allah in the Earth. So with the presence of Israk Mikraj, this proves the honour of Prophet Muhammad SAW and that of it should be remembered all the time.

As told in the holy Quran, Mikraj is a journey of Muhammad to Sidratul Muntaha, at which he received the command of Allah to perform prayers during the day and night. Initially, the call for prayers was set to as many as 50 times per day, however so, the Prophet solicited the order to be reduced to five times a day as it is today.

Even though the event of Israk Mikraj is absolutely unimaginable and beyond our ability to visualise, all believers holding the faith to Allah SWT must be convinced with the event without any doubts. That’s because surely only Allah SWT knows every thing in His power. What needs to be seeded in the heart is our belief towards Him and that we are required to be in a state of belief by performing daily prayers five times a day to prove our faith to Him.

IRM To Empower More Entrepreneurs

Bangi, 31 Mar 2018 – A total of 15 entrepreneurs will be empowered through a project implemented by Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) namely Dare to Growth: Road to Global.

According to IRM Partner Care Division, Kamarul Halim Sakrani, the project holds a primary objective to educate all new entrepreneurs in developing their product across the nation including South East Asia.

“We are also planning to develop a new group of entrepreneurs from the programme we implement to establish quality products as their future assets and we believe they should be retained,” he said in his speech.

As in line with the responsibility of IRM as an international humanitarian organisation, Halim further explained that these entrepreneurs will go through a series of practical training courses consisting of business knowledge as a preparation to become a competitive global entrepreneur.

Besides, IRM will also allocate a few slots for business assistance to support as well as improve their entrepreneurial competency so the current standard requirements are met.

As a record, selected entrepreneurs who joined the programme are those beneficiaries including asnaf whom IRM had helped previously in terms of their sustainability to own a business while increasing their household income.

One of the beneficiaries, Dery Suwanda Yondiswan said, “Islamic Relief has offered help in terms of business preparation and personality enhancement and now I own three branches of my business in the heart of Kuala Lumpur.”

Suwanda also hopes the programme implemented by IRM can be a major solution for those in need to sustain their life in the long run.

Moving Towards A Healthy World.

Health is an intangible gift every human should be grateful for. We breathe the same oxygen normally, eat a plate of Nasi Lemak as a kick-start of the day, and yet we can still walk properly. This is all due to the fact that our health enables us to perform daily tasks.

But across the ocean, half of the world is lacking the access to healthcare services and a total of 100 million are reported to have been forced into poverty from paying bills and medical services as based by World Health Organization (WHO).

2018 marks the 70th anniversary of World Health Day since its inception in 1948 and this year, World Health Day will focus on “Universal Health Coverage: everyone, everywhere” to ensure that everyone in all parts of the world can have access to essential quality health services

Islamic Relief (IR), being among the most recognized non-government bodies have always been committed to reach out to communities and minimize poverties, which includes offering help in terms of health services.

In 2017, IR Syria implemented several health projects in an effort to support hospitals as well as medical centres, which benefitted over 1.3 million Syrians. Across northern Syria, IR has been supporting health infrastructure by establishing and running four mobile health units in Aleppo and Idleb, providing 60 primary healthcare centres with medicines, supporting 13 dialysis centres with medical kits and medicines in delivering disposable supplies to seven blood banks.

IR also trained a total number of 152 health workers and management unit staff in delivering quality health services and coordinated with stakeholders to ensure an effective humanitarian response. Overall, these projects had helped approximately 240,000 beneficiaries across the area.

Besides, IR Syria in the northern region also supported the emergency health services of 50 hospitals, seven physiotherapy centres and three thalassemia centres by supplying essential medicines and disposable medical supplies. The project comprised of supporting reproductive health training for doctors and midwives operating in some of the most difficult conditions across Syria. Overall, these programmes benefitted more than 324,000 beneficiaries.

Meanwhile in Yemen, a total number of 16.4 million people were desperately in need of basic healthcare. IR has efficiently contributed to emergency responses against the Acute Watery Diarrhoea and cholera break. The interventions were focused towards case management of confirmed cases at identified health facilities including prevention of further spread of the outbreak.

Last year alone, IR has delivered 19 tonnes of medical aid to Yemen, deemed as the worst country facing cholera outbreak in modern history. Following that case, Yemen experienced the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world, with a cholera epidemic that identified over 900,000 cases and more than 2,000 deaths.

IR Malaysia (IRM), being one of the most concerned teams in the heart of South East Asia has also made an impactful move to help mitigate health risk in Syria. Due to the health system disruption in Syria, the population became more vulnerable to acute and chronic renal impairments. Hence, more than 4,000 dialysis patients are desperately in need of weekly life-saving haemodylisis treatment.

The project namely Dialysis Centre Support in Syria supported the very much overstretched health capacities which were short of assistance since the beginning of the Syrian crisis and especially with the continuous attacks on health facilities in the area.

IRM supported haemodialysis centre with various types of materials which covered medical disposables and drugs, including basic materials required in order to run the centre and allow staff to apply treatment. For this project, a total number of 4,320 beneficiaries acquired the free access to medical services.

As a call to World Health Day 2018, Islamic Relief will continue to support health service providers to improve health sectors across the world to alleviate the suffering beneficiaries.

IRM Explores The Life in Mabul Island

Mabul Island located in Sabah is among the best destinations that has captured the eyes of many tourists over the years be it from the country or overseas. One of the best parts in this island is the crystal-clear sea and its living things inside. Though it is a well-known tourism destination, the island has its own dark story behind that no one really knows about. Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) had the opportunity to explore the many hidden stories in Mabul Island.

Mabul Island voted as the best tourism destination is actually a place accommodated by those people whose citizenship are not recognised by the government of Malaysia. Not to mention, the island is also well-known with the life of sea-gypsy, deemed to be ones originated from Pala’u root. It can be divided into three types of community namely pala’u, refugees, and the locals from Sabah.

To date, the community in Mabul Island consists of over 3,000 people that can be sub-clustered into 580 families. Among the facilities observed in the island can include one government school, one Islamic school known as KAFA, Alternative Learning Centre (ALC), mosque, and small prayer room. They also run a business at their house and most items are brought in from Semporna back to the island.

The economy in Mabul Island is more focused on fisheries and usually, most fisheries in the sea are sold to tourists travelling in Mabul Island. They can include fishes, prawns, crabs, and squids. However, IRM revealed that the community is experiencing a water issue as they do not have a clean source of water to carry out their daily life. Drinking water is normally bought in Semporna while the water from well is used for general use such as bathing and cleaning.

Apart from that, as stateless people, they do not own any verified documents as a way to ease their impediments especially when they have to go through a process with any governmental bodies. This includes education as majority of them are not recognised as Malaysian to be registered under government school. However, with a help from a local that runs a tourism business in Mabul Island, ALC was developed as a platform of education for the kids to learn the basics; writing, reading, and calculating.

Since last year, ALC has successfully attracted a total number of 283 students from different age groups ranging within five year-old to fifteen year-old. Everyone in Mabul Island is a Muslim follower and that includes the kids as well which is why basic Islamic teachings such as performing the prayers, Al-fatihah recitation and comprehension, and daily prayers are injected in them so they will understand deeply about Islam. So, it is not strange to see these kids can recite Al-fatihah while at the same time comprehend the meaning behind the Surah.

Concurrently, health service is also another issue to be put under the spotlight as the community is not accommodated with any health institution. Any one from their community that falls sick has to be brought to the clinic or hospital located far away in Semporna. What’s more unfortunate is that, fees will be charged upon and far higher than what most Malaysians have to pay.

IRM also had the opportunity to spend some time with the young kids in Mabul Island by conducting several friendly activities as a way to foster a better relationship with them so they will get a sense of belonging. Cleanliness and hygiene are often frowned upon, however IRM considers both elements to be important. Hence, a session with the kids with an emphasis to brush the teeth properly was done so they are better exposed to oral care.

Although basic Islamic practices have been their daily routines, IRM as the ambassador of Islamic-based humanitarian organisation also stressed the aspect of religious guidance to make them understand deeper about their religion, as most of them are Muslims. Among the components taught were the context of Al-Fatihah and its translation. On top of that, they were also equipped with Dhuha as a preparation for them to advance their knowledge.

The following activity involved those kids to polish their innate skill through drawing. It is not an excuse for them to stop polishing up their abilities even in the absence of drawing tools. IRM found that some of the kids have the inborn ability to inject their creative juice which is on par with the usual kids who can paint. From our observation, these kids are now capable of writing, reading, and calculating.

According to the evaluation and visitation conducted, IRM has a future plan to offer them with several aids through Ramadan Relief programme. The aids will be in the form of 100 food packs for 100 families perceived to be needing our help. Mosque will be given 70 Al-Quran so the people are at ease to organise any religious activities such as tarannum and tadarus.

Holistically, Mabul Island that we see as a picturesque travel destination is not as it seems to be as they are filled with various hidden stories in terms of its history and communities in the island. The status of their citizenship will still remain for another decades if there are no parties taking part to come into solution

Albania Affected by Floods.

Shkodra, 29 Mar 2018 – Melting of fallen snow due to warm winds and gradually increased temperatures have caused extensive floods in the region of Skhodra, Albania.

In the last few days, continuous rainfall combined with an increase in discharge from hydro power plants have worsened the flooding situation.

The levels of the Drini and Buna rivers have increased in which their banks have been inundated and caused extensive flooding in several areas.

High levels of water are impacting severely local people as some are surrounded by the water and have been forced to abandon their homes and affected people have been evacuated to temporary shelter.

Islamic Relief (IR) Albania has been responding to the flood by providing water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and non-food items (NFI) support to 600 beneficiaries located in remote areas of Skhodra municipality.

IRM Helps Visual Disabled Person

Bangi, 29 Mar 2018 – Islamic Relief Malaysia (IRM) along with Persatuan Orang-orang Cacat Penglihatan Islam Malaysia (PERTIS) and Madrasah Abdullah Ummi Maktum Al-Majidiah aims to collect a total fund of RM730,000.00 in an effort to help 40 visual disabled person (VDP) through Wakaf Mata Hati Project.

The project which is expected to run for a year will provide a few training courses consisting of Braille Al-Quran, soft skill trainings and da’wah, entrepreneurship courses, and information and communication technology (ICT), as well as alternative health training.

A madrasah that is established through this project aims to produce and empower more Muslims VDPs to be literate in Quranic knowledge and able to earn income from the skills they have learned at the institution.

To accomplish the project, IRM also prepares a few implementation methods including lectures, practical learning, presentation, group work, and learning through problem solving.

For a record, 15% out of 4.6 million Malaysian citizens are considered disabled and more than 700,000 people are visually impaired.

IRM hopes that the project can be a platform to foster a better relationship between the disabled and the public in order to create an inclusive community.
