Somalia Water Supply Systems Complex

DID YOU KNOW?

  • More than 50% of Somalia’s population lack access to water sources – (UNICEF).
  • 99% of the water used in Somalia is for livestock and agriculture, BUT the existing water sources are not enough to meet those needs – (UNICEF).
  • Water scarcity also leads to food scarcity for them.
  • Women and girls in Africa have to sacrifice nearly 200 hours every day to fetch water – (UNICEF).
  • Drought in Somalia resulted in over a quarter million deaths in 2011.
  • 1.8 million children suffer from severe malnutrition due to lack of water sources.

In Somalia, Islamic Relief plans to build the Somalia Water Supply Systems Complex with specific aims to collect RM500,000.

A total of 5,000 waqf lots are offered through this project for RM100 per lot.

What is unique about the Water Supply System Complex project in Somalia?

  • It is equipped with water tanks and solar panel systems.
  • Animals also have their own designated drinking water area, separate from the water collection pipes for the residents.
  • Reducing the distance of travel to fetch water. From over 10KM to 400M.
“It's very difficult to live in a drought. There is no water source in this area. I had to walk 20km to get water.

“Since the Islamic Relief built the water complex, I no longer have to walk far.”
Dahabo Mahmud Wa'ays
“In the 3-month drought period, 70 of my livestock perished.

“In this village, many houses are abandoned because the residents have to move to other areas with a water source.

“Please help us. We are in desperate need.”
Yusof Omar
“The drought caused my livestock to die. Schools were also closed because many students had to move to other areas to find a water source.

“Thank you Islamic Relief. This water complex has changed our lives significantly.”

Sa’ad ibn ‘Ubadah reported: I said, “O Messenger of Allah, my mother has died. Shall I give charity on her behalf?”

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Yes.” I said, “Which charity is best?” The Prophet said, “A drink of water.”
