Emergency Response As Sierra Leone Mudslide Claims Almost 400 Lives

A national emergency has been declared after severe flooding and mudslides in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

Almost 400 people have been confirmed dead, and at least 600 still missing according to BBC news reports.

Sierra Leone’s president has appealed for urgent help to support the thousands of people affected by the disaster on the outskirts of the country’s capital.

Islamic Relief will work with a local partner to support those affected by:

  • Providing the necessary support to Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health for the burial of victims
  • Distributing bedding kits and kitchen utensils to 300 families
  • Supporting community based mobilisation to ensure displaced people are housed

Funding desperately needed to avert humanitarian catastrophe

A complete and utter disaster on an apocalyptic scale is destined to occur in Afder, the Somali region in the south east of Ethiopia.

According to recent reports from the United Nations before the year is out some 10.5 million people will not have regular access to safe drinking water, 8.5 million people will require emergency food assistance and 376,000 children will become severely acutely malnourished.

Tensions are rising as the competition for resources, such as water, becomes more acute. Islamic Relief is delivering water supplies to the region using water tanker trucks, which is a last resort and unsustainable in the long term.

David Crawford, Head of Islamic Relief Worldwide’s humanitarian department recently came back from the region.

“Travelling around that part of Ethiopia is like being on an apocalyptic movie set such as Mad Max. Swirling dust storms along with rotting animals has led to there being an overriding stench of death. The situation is desperate with a need for clean water and sanitation to help stem the spread of water borne diseases such as acute watery diarrhoea.

“Islamic Relief is working closely with government-led health centres – supplying vaccinations, medicines and training staff in patient assessments and referrals. We are also providing outreach medical services to the mothers and children who are unable to make it to the centres. We are operating in remote parts of the Somali region with an entirely local team, who communicate closely with community members to find out their needs.

“In addition to water, food and medicine, people have asked for cash so they can then choose whether or not they spend it on shelter or assets to rebuild their livelihoods. This allows them to lead their lives with as much dignity and self-respect as is possible in these circumstances.”

Food Insecurity Leaves 8.5 Million People In Need Of Urgent Assistance In Ethiopia

Prolonged drought and increasing food insecurity in Ethiopia has resulted in internal displacement, particularly in the Afar region which borders Somalia.

In Ethiopia, 8.5 million people are currently food insecure and require urgent assistance.

In the last three months alone this number has increased dramatically from 7.8 million as the situation worsens.

376,000 children aged five or under are severely malnourished.

An acute lack of food and water across the region has led to people fleeing their homes in search of survival.

Islamic Relief Ethiopia is one of just a few agencies able to access the Afar Zone in the Somali region, which is amongst the worst affected areas in East Africa.

Our teams on the ground have carried out a rapid needs assessment at a camp where 3,000 families are in need of urgent immediate assistance.

Emergency provisions such as water, food, shelter and hygiene kits have been identified as the most urgent needs.

Islamic Relief UK, alongside the wider Islamic Relief family, is supporting an integrated response which will aim to meet the immediate needs of these families.

Providing Water For Life In Somaliland

Due to the impact of climate change and global warming, drought has become a recurring issue in Qoyta town, located in the Togdheer region of Somaliland. Unfortunately, this has resulted in severe loss of life, both in terms of people and livestock.

Almost 28,000 households are facing food insecurity, with poorer families being forced to reduce their quantity and variety of food. Many people are also suffering from hunger and malnutrition.

Water is scarce resource and many of the existing water sources have dried up. The water that remains is unsuitable for human consumption and is likely to spread waterborne diseases.

Water saves lives

Thanks to your support, things will be changing in Qoyta town. The community will now have access to safe and clean water, providing a lifeline to many vulnerable people.

Islamic Relief will drill a borehole for the community to reach water sources deep under the ground.

This long-term water solution will provide water for over 70 years and support 3,000 people affected by the drought in Somaliland.

The borehole will enable families to have water for drinking, cooking and personal hygiene.

Alhamdulillah, on average, each person will receive at least 15 litres of water per day, providing much needed relief to those who need it most.

Syria: Rescuing A Lost Generation

38 attacks on schools took place in Syria in the first half of 2016 alone.

When it comes to conflict, children are always amongst the most vulnerable. As a conflict evolves, an escalation in violence and extreme poverty become prevalent. Right now, approximately 7 million Syrian children are living in poverty.

Due to the destruction of educational and essential child services, there has been an increase in child marriages and labour, allowing abuse and exploitation to flourish.

6.1 million children and educational staff are in need of support.

No lost generation

We strongly believe that education is vital to the development and well-being of children. Without educational needs being met during this prolonged crisis, an entire generation is at risk of destitution.

Islamic Relief has been providing educational support in Syria since 2012, contributing to improving the education and individual development of thousands of children.

Your donations will help save a generation of Syrian children by keeping them in schools and preventing early marriages and forced labour.

Providing a good quality education

Thanks to you, Islamic Relief is now providing an education for 2,750 students. We are achieving this by:

  • Building functional classrooms at five schools
  • Providing students with the books and equipment needed to aid their education.
  • Ensuring 144 teachers and support staff get the support and training they need to deliver a good quality education.

Your donations also mean that we can address the trauma experienced by these children. Many children have had to witness death and destruction, which could foster into long term vulnerabilities if not addressed at an early stage. We will ensure specialist trainers are in place to provide the physical and psychosocial support needed to return some normality to the lives of innocent children.

Alhamdulillah, by the grace of Allah SWT and your support, thousands of Syrian children will now have a brighter future to look forward to.
