5.8 magnitude Earthquake Struck Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, 26 Sept. 2019– A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck some parts of Pakistan earlier today especially at Mirpur district and the tremors have been felt in various cities including Jatla, Mangla and the villages of Manda and Afzalpur.

Latest reports indicated 30 fatalities with 450 injured and these figures are likely to be increased.

The Government of Pakistan declared emergency in all the hospitals within Mirpur district, while several main roads in Mirpur district suffered major damage, as well as three major bridges.

The authorities are currently in Mirpur focusing on search and rescue operations, assessing the damage and providing life-saving support.

200 tents, 800 blankets, 200 kitchen sets, 100 medical kits and 50,000 bottles of water has been dispatched to the affected area.

Islamic Relief (IR) Pakistan immediately deployed a three members Emergency Response Team (ERT) to Mirpur District to conduct an assessment.

300 Homes Damage, 197 Injured as Two Earthquake Strike Albania

Two earthquakes hit Albania on 21 September with 5.8 magnitude followed by 5.3 magnitude 11 minutes later. The disaster left at least 197 people including children injured as a result of falling items or debris, including bricks.
300 homes have been reported to be severely damaged and collapsed. Residents who have been displaced currently are living in temporary shelter tents.
The humanitarian aid needed at this time was the reconstruction of the houses. Hitting with extreme winter arrivals, all affected residents have to deal with difficult situations.
Islamic Relief (IR) Albania is now monitoring the situation and is ready to provide immediate assistance.

610 Households Urgently Need Humanitarian Assistance

NIGER, 10 September 2019– Heavy rainfall in Niger has resulted in flash floods causing deaths and damages to properties.

Floods triggered by high water levels in the Niger River have caused regional devastation in the West African region.

In Niger, thousands are forced to leave their homes, devastated by the collapse and drowning.

Dosso and Tilliberi are among the worst affected with a total of 610 households (4913 individuals) and is in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Islamic Relief (IR) Niger operating in Dosso and Tilliberi has identified key needs such as: temporary shelters, food assistance and non-food assistance (NFI).

IR Niger is currently monitoring the situation and plans to provide emergency assistance for 3 months.

Hurricane Dorian Rips Bahamas

ABACO ISLAND, 10 September 2019– Hurricane Dorian, known as a Category 5 hurricane with a speed of 300km / h and storms, hit Bahamas between 1 and 2 September 2019 .

Some 70,000 people are in need of shelter, food and water while some families lose their homes. At least 43 people have been killed and this figure is expected to increase to hundreds while thousands more may be lost.

About 3500 people have been evacuated and are now sheltering in tents and shelters. There are concerns that diarrhea and other waterborne diseases could spread.

Some of the most affected areas are the busy cities, occupied by Haitian workers. 90% of the infrastructure in the Abaco Islands has been destroyed.

The only international airport on Grand Bahama Island was also destroyed and as such could not be used for evacuation and aid assistance.

Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) will continue to monitor the situation and collect information from nearby Islamic Relief partners.

Mali Floods Affect 14,000 People

MALI, 5 September 2019– Heavy rains since 24th of August have resulted in heavy flooding in Mali, especially in the Circle of Nara in the Koulikoro region, which was one of the most affected areas.

Immediate assistance is needed for residents of Nara town and village, as well as the Guire, Fallou, Ougadou and Dilly communities.

In Nara, 73 homes have collapsed while in Guire 240 households were severely affected.

In Dilly and Ougadou, 14 homes were destroyed, while in Fallou 12 villages were affected and over 400 hectares of land were destroyed, leaving 81 homes abandoned due to risk of water flooding.

In all five areas, nearly 14,000 people were affected directly by the floods.

Food, non-food assistance (NFI), water disinfection products, temporary shelters, school supplies and children’s clothing are greatly needed to assist these people.

Islamic Relief (IR) Mali is currently monitoring the situation and devising a plan to help 3,840 people (640 households).

6,000 Refugees Flooding into Northwest Syria

IDLIB, 4 September 2019– Since the collapsed of the ceasefire on August 5, thousands of civilians have fled to North Idlib. More than 600,000 refugees have been recorded in north-western Syria since early May.

According to the United Nations (UN), the attacks on August 28 and 30 damaged four facilities while three more are likely to be damaged.

The UN recorded that more than 550 civilians have died since the attack began, including 450 women and children according to the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).

Majority of the refugees have moved into the Idleb Administrative District, with a smaller number moving north of Aleppo.

At least 58 schools have been damaged or affected by airstrikes since the end of April in the area, while about 100 schools are being used as refugee shelters.

Humanitarian assistance is urgently needed such as shelter, personal hygiene products within and outside the camp, wheat flour for bread, packs of food, trauma care services, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) and emergency education.
