Major thunderstorm engulf Northwest Syria

SYRIA, 19 June 2020 – The downpours and strong winds triggered flash floods that hit many areas including displacement camps in Northwest Syria, affected 54 camps inhabited by more than 3,174 families.

At least 1,285 families have lost their shelters with at least a further 1,000 families having experienced partial damage to their tents.

Currently, repair work is carried out to actively drain the standing water in the IDP camps, establish sewage and water networks, paving and laying gravel roads to enable movement.

The most urgent humanitarian needs are particularly shelter, food, non-food item specifically bedding and tent accessories, and hygiene kits.

Islamic Relief has been assessing the situation on the ground to provide tents and plastic sheets to the affected families besides coordinating with other organizations in exploring an immediate response.

Lebanese people hit hard by an economic downturn, currency depreciation, and the COVID-19 pandemic

LEBANON, 15 June 2020 – Groups of protesters and demonstrators in Lebanon have become increasingly extreme due to the economic downturn and currency depreciation as impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was reported that the demonstrators hurl stones and petrol bombs at security forces, banks and government buildings in Beirut and Tripoli.

Tensions in Lebanon have been heightened in October 2019 and have since subsided in March 2020 following the implementation of movement control order and lockdown to control the infectivity of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result, it is sending the country’s economy reeling. Thousands have lost their jobs while daily wage workers did not receive their salaries from employers.

Most of the population is no longer able to afford the daily necessities to survive.

Islamic Relief Lebanon is currently monitoring the situation closely and planning for appropriate responses.

Amphan cyclone left 12 deaths in West Bengal and nine deaths in Bangladesh

NEW DELHI, 21 May 2020 – The Amphan cyclone that hit West Bengal in India and Bangladesh has caused twelve and nine deaths respectively.

According to the Need Assessment Working Group (NAWG) in Bangladesh, about 7.9 million people in the country are exposed to the disaster including disable persons, children aged four years and below, elderly, and pregnant women.

The cyclone has caused damage to crops, houses, power poles, and public transport stations.

Public roads and residences were also reported to be filled with mud.

The Covid-19 movement control order has exacerbated the emergency response.

The effort to evacuate affected people to resettlement was disrupted due to these restrictions.

Among the urgent needs are food, clean water, hygiene kits, shelters, emergency care and medicines, water, sanitation and hygiene specifically for Covid-19, and psychosocial support.

Islamic Relief Bangladesh is currently in Satkhira, one of the worst affected areas and has mobilized 50 volunteers to assist with the work of relocating affected people to safer areas.

Islamic Relief India is currently working closely with local authorities and other NGOs for a possible alternative.

Tropical Cyclone Batters Predicted Hit Bangladesh

BANGLADESH, 19 May 2020 – The tropical cyclone Amphan is forecast to move north and then go across Bangladesh.

About 13 area was told has exposed to the cyclone that caused big damages, destruction, and worse affected the school building, highway, electricity, plants, and many more.

The big hurricane was told has a maximum speed at 225 to 245 kilometers per hour has made the beach as the main area that being exposed to the big threats.

It was expected for the lower area and the beach coast area will be affected by the big cyclone at 5 to 10 feet with the speed of wind at 140 to 160 kilometer per hour and also comes with the heavy rain.

The maritime port at Mongla and Payra had started to issue signals and warnings to avoid the public from entering the place.

Every fishing boats and nets at the north bay and deep-sea also advised stopping their operation in the meantime for a while until the weather notified to be as good as always.

Among the urgent needs that are needed during the season are foods, clean water, first aid kit, cleaning kit, shelters, and medical assistance as soon as possible.

More than 200 people died in East Africa after heavy rains

AFRICA, 18 May 2020 – Torrential rains and flooding in Kenya and Somalia have resulted in the death of over 200 people meanwhile hundreds of thousands others were affected.

The most affected areas are Islamic Relief Kenya sites in Mandera County, Garissa and Tana River County, Hirshabelle, Jubaland, Southwest, and Puntland states.

The floods have caused damage to property, destroyed clean water facilities, strained critical infrastructure, submerged homes and agricultural land which are critical to livelihoods, and heightened a dread risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and AWD.

Islamic Relief proposes an immediate emergency response to provide awareness-raising activities, considering the ongoing Covid-19 risks as well as the potential for an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

Seven died in Yemen floods

Yemen, 22 April 2020 – Torrential rains and flooding in Marib, Yemen have resulted in the death of seven people meanwhile 85 others have been injured.

Sana’a, provinces Ibb and Hajjah in northern Yemen have been severely affected.

The National Meteorology Centre has forecasted more heavy rains, high winds, and thunderstorms in the northern areas, with a potential of further flooding.

The floods can cause damage to roads and agricultural land, hinder humanitarian activities, affect the movement of civilians, and a dread risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria.

The most affected areas are IDPs sites in four districts of Marib city, Marib AlWadi, Serwah, and Medghil.

Islamic Relief with World Food Programme (WFP) are exploring an immediate response to provide food aid to the affected people.
