Drought Puts Kenyans at Risk of Starvation

KENYA, September 20, 2021 – An estimated 2.1 Kenyans are in Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) level 3 due to drought conditions that have been worsening.

The figure shows a 70 percent increase since early February 2021.

Malnutrition rates were also reported high.

Around 70 percent of water pans in Kenya have dried up while water levels in the well have significantly declined.

According to Islamic Relief Kenya, the livestock conditions are poor due to a lack of food resources. The livestock’s weight began to decrease which impacted the selling price.

This situation makes herders unable to buy food and other necessities.

The affected people are in urgent need of food, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), and livestock support.

Humanitarian Crisis Worsens in South Sudan

SOUTH SUDAN, September 17, 2021 – According to the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA), at least 380,000 people have been affected by flooding in Jonglei, Unity, Northern Bahr El Ghazal, and Warrap.

In Warrap, there is an outbreak of measles, Rubella virus, and hepatitis E meanwhile, the number of COVID-19 positive cases increased.

Transportation and logistics operations in the Uganda-South Sudan border have been suspended due to incidents of road ambushes and the killing of truck drivers incident.

More than 13,300 people have been forced to flee from their homes due to armed conflict between the South Sudan People’s Defence Force (SSPDF) and local gangs.

Those affected people require urgent humanitarian assistance such as food, shelter, non -food items (NFI), and water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) support.

Islamic Relief has a couple of humanitarian projects in Tonj North, South Sudan focusing on 5 areas in Alabek, Awul, Akop, Kirik, and Rualbet through food and WASH assistance.

Islamic Relief Distribute Non-Food Items Assistance To Those Affected Flood In Sudan

SUDAN, 7 September 2021 – Over 88,000 people affected by heavy rains and flash floods in Sudan.

Aj Jazirah, South and west Darfur and Gedaref are the most affected areas.

As of 1st September, about 4,800 houses were destroyed and 12,780 house were damaged.

Most of those affected were forced to stay with their relatives or under government buildings.

Humanitarian Aid Commission of Sudan (HAC) and aid organizations have started the rescue and lifesaving
assistance to help those affected.

If the current situation deteriorates further, Sudan may need to replenish stocks of relief items.

Recently, Islamic Relief has completed distributing non-food items (NFI) assistance to those affected in Al Fao,
Gedaref and North Khartoum.

Afghanistan Need Urgent Humanitarian Assistance

AFGHANISTAN, 6 September 2021 – More than 17,600 internally displaced person (IDPs) in Kabul need humanitarian assistance similar with Herat, Nangarhar, Balkh and Kandahar cities.

Overall, 550,780 have been displaced in 2021 due to ongoing conflict.

The United Nations (UN) has warned that food stocks in Afghanistan were running out by end of this month and at least 200 million dollars needed to supply foods for vulnerable people.

More than half of children in five years and below are already suffer from malnutrition and more than one third people do not have get enough food to eat.

Food and fuel price were continued to increase and it cause many families are force to sell their household to get some money for daily need and migration process to others countries in northern provinces.

About 117,000 people has been evacuated from Kabul meanwhile electricity and water supplies are intermittent, and the internet networking is slow.

At least, five rockets were fired to aim police station in Kabul on 30 August. Seven people died in the incident include women and children.

Besides, nine people died include six children in another incident which involve drone strike that targeting a vehicle in a residential neighborhood in Kabul.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) estimated that 500,000 people will leave this country in the next four month due to political uncertainty.

Islamic Relief has joined assessment with other humanitarian partners to identified urgent needs for those affected since 28 August. As of now, 286 families were identified to get an assistance and Islamic Relief will expand the survey to cover the wider need in Kabul.

Islamic Relief were plan to distribute 950 food packs.

In the meantime, Islamic Relief Worldwide has launched Afghanistan Emergency Appeal to raise fund 5 million dollar to provide humanitarian aid for those affected such as food packs, hygiene kit, water storage kit, non-food items (NFI) Kits and shelter.

Security in Afghanistan Remains Stable

AFGHANISTAN, August 24, 2021 – The security in Kabul and other districts remains stable even though people in Afghanistan are still in fear and anxiety.

The government has managed to control criminal activities and will take action to arrest anyone who tries to take advantage during the transition period.

Taxes on fuel and food which come from Aqina port have decreased. As a result, the price of fuel and food in Kabul and other provinces has become cheaper than before.

Most supermarkets and shopping malls in Kabul have started the operations meanwhile all banks remain closed.

The Ministry of Higher Education has announced that the school will open soon.

Islamic Relief Afghanistan is currently initiating response activities to help those in need by distributing humanitarian assistance such as food aid, hygiene kits, water storage kit, non -food items (NFI), and shelter.

Germany Floods: Islamic Relief Distributes Hot Meal Assistance

GERMANY, August 23, 2021 – Islamic Relief Germany has been distributing hot meal assistance to the affected people in Auf Der Muhle, ​​Stolberg, Germany from 9 to 15 August.

The catastrophic floods that hit Germany in mid-July have collapsed many homes while basements and streets were damaged caused by landslides and also flooded.

Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate are the most affected area.

According to Islamic Relief Germany, 172 people have died so far as of July 22.

Kindergartens and schools were also reported to have been damaged while telecommunication networks, power, and drinking water supply in many places were still disrupted.

Residents of senior citizens, retirement staff, and the disabled (OKU) had to be evacuated.

There are 15 aid organizations actively response in affected areas and identifying the urgent needs for those who were affected.

Islamic Relief is planning to help them by cleaning debris which involves public facilities such as kindergartens, community centers, schools, and libraries.
