Amphan cyclone left 12 deaths in West Bengal and nine deaths in Bangladesh

NEW DELHI, 21 May 2020 – The Amphan cyclone that hit West Bengal in India and Bangladesh has caused twelve and nine deaths respectively.

According to the Need Assessment Working Group (NAWG) in Bangladesh, about 7.9 million people in the country are exposed to the disaster including disable persons, children aged four years and below, elderly, and pregnant women.

The cyclone has caused damage to crops, houses, power poles, and public transport stations.

Public roads and residences were also reported to be filled with mud.

The Covid-19 movement control order has exacerbated the emergency response.

The effort to evacuate affected people to resettlement was disrupted due to these restrictions.

Among the urgent needs are food, clean water, hygiene kits, shelters, emergency care and medicines, water, sanitation and hygiene specifically for Covid-19, and psychosocial support.

Islamic Relief Bangladesh is currently in Satkhira, one of the worst affected areas and has mobilized 50 volunteers to assist with the work of relocating affected people to safer areas.

Islamic Relief India is currently working closely with local authorities and other NGOs for a possible alternative.

Tropical Cyclone Batters Predicted Hit Bangladesh

BANGLADESH, 19 May 2020 – The tropical cyclone Amphan is forecast to move north and then go across Bangladesh.

About 13 area was told has exposed to the cyclone that caused big damages, destruction, and worse affected the school building, highway, electricity, plants, and many more.

The big hurricane was told has a maximum speed at 225 to 245 kilometers per hour has made the beach as the main area that being exposed to the big threats.

It was expected for the lower area and the beach coast area will be affected by the big cyclone at 5 to 10 feet with the speed of wind at 140 to 160 kilometer per hour and also comes with the heavy rain.

The maritime port at Mongla and Payra had started to issue signals and warnings to avoid the public from entering the place.

Every fishing boats and nets at the north bay and deep-sea also advised stopping their operation in the meantime for a while until the weather notified to be as good as always.

Among the urgent needs that are needed during the season are foods, clean water, first aid kit, cleaning kit, shelters, and medical assistance as soon as possible.

Currently, Islamic Relief is monitoring the situation closely and exploring an emergency response.

More than 200 people died in East Africa after heavy rains

AFRICA, 18 May 2020 – Torrential rains and flooding in Kenya and Somalia have resulted in the death of over 200 people meanwhile hundreds of thousands others were affected.

The most affected areas are Islamic Relief Kenya sites in Mandera County, Garissa and Tana River County, Hirshabelle, Jubaland, Southwest, and Puntland states.

The floods have caused damage to property, destroyed clean water facilities, strained critical infrastructure, submerged homes and agricultural land which are critical to livelihoods, and heightened a dread risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and AWD.

Islamic Relief proposes an immediate emergency response to provide awareness-raising activities, considering the ongoing Covid-19 risks as well as the potential for an outbreak of waterborne diseases.

The urgent needs of humanitarian assistance are particularly shelters, tents, food, non-food items, ready-to-eat food, clothes, water, and hygiene kits.

Seven died in Yemen floods

Yemen, 22 April 2020 – Torrential rains and flooding in Marib, Yemen have resulted in the death of seven people meanwhile 85 others have been injured.

Sana’a, provinces Ibb and Hajjah in northern Yemen have been severely affected.

The National Meteorology Centre has forecasted more heavy rains, high winds, and thunderstorms in the northern areas, with a potential of further flooding.

The floods can cause damage to roads and agricultural land, hinder humanitarian activities, affect the movement of civilians, and a dread risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera and malaria.

The most affected areas are IDPs sites in four districts of Marib city, Marib AlWadi, Serwah, and Medghil.

Islamic Relief with World Food Programme (WFP) are exploring an immediate response to provide food aid to the affected people.

Islamic Relief Malaysia Adamant in Delivering Aid Despite Limited Movement

BANGI, April 7, 2020 – Despite remaining fully comply with the government’s implementation of Movement Control Order (MCO) nationwide, Islamic Relief Malaysia consistently proactive to provide aid to the affected groups of people in restriction of movement.

Humanitarian aid workers consider the constraints faced as a challenge and a new experience besides training themselves to be more productive and creative in identifying the possible ways to ensure integrity and trust of donors be fully delivered to the beneficiaries.

Among the aid given are 1000 pieces of N95 face masks to the National Audit Academy (AAN) in Nilai which served as a quarantine centre for Malaysians repatriated from Iran. Nine boxes of biscuits, fast food, milk, packet drinks, and mineral water were distributed to frontliners at the quarantine centre in Ampang Hospital; and two units pharmaceutical refrigerator for medication/vaccine storage and preservation in Tuanku Ja’afar Hospital in the collaboration with MRSM Malaysia Student Association (Ansara), Taiping.

Apart from that, Islamic Relief Malaysia volunteers consist of Bilik Gerakan Khas (BGK) Pantai Timur committee members provided basic necessities such as rice, eggs, sardines, flour, and cooking oil to 80 families among the peasants and rubber tappers community in Batu Karang and Kedai Buloh, Pasir Mas who are suffering from chronic diseases.

The BGK Pantai Timur also provided chicken rice packs to 60 rubber tapper families in Rantau Panjang, Kelantan.

Not only in the Peninsular, Islamic Relief Malaysia personnel in Borneo also trying to ease the burden of the affected people in collaboration with MyAmal and the Malaysian Chinese Muslim Association (MACMA) by distributing food essential packs comprising of rice, biscuits, sugar, and et cetera to the people in Inanam and Menggatal, Sabah.

Besides food and non-food item, Islamic Relief Malaysia provides financial assistance to frontline agencies and institutions such as hospitals to assist them in the process of purchasing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) specifically face mask, surgical gown, head cap, face shield, and hand sanitizer. Other than that, the matriarchs, vulnerable families whose households are living hand to mouth, small traders and hawkers whose their income is measured on a daily workload basis also received the aid through the fund raised from COVID-19 Emergency Appeal campaign.

Urgent Need for Humanitarian Aid In Syria

IDLIB, 13 March 2020 – Syrian people are in urgent need of humanitarian aid particularly food, shelter, water, sanitation and hygiene despite of the ceasefire announcement on 6 March.

The total number of displaced people in north-west Syria has reached 961 thousand which is equal to 186,658 families.

Eighty one percent from the figure are among the women and children meanwhile the remaining are among the men, senior citizens and disable persons.

According to World Health Organization (WHO), 84 health care centres consist of hospitals, clinic, specialized care centres and mobile clinics which employing 500 medical staff have suspended its operation due to safety and security.

Eighteen facilities supported by Islamic Relief have been affected and damaged by the airstrike as of 4 March.
