Islamic Relief responds to flood emergency in Albania

TIRANA, 12 January 2026 — Islamic Relief has mobilised an emergency response following severe flooding caused by prolonged heavy rainfall across several regions in Albania since early January.

The floods have affected Durrës, Lezhë, Fier, Vlorë and Gjirokastër, submerging roads, villages and farmland, and prompting evacuation and rescue operations by local authorities.

The Albanian Armed Forces and Civil Emergency structures are supporting flood management, evacuation efforts and infrastructure response in affected areas.

With river levels remaining high and the risk of further flash flooding, Islamic Relief Albania has been working closely with local municipalities to assess the situation and identify urgent humanitarian needs.

Islamic Relief Albania teams have since visited Durrës, Vlorë, Shkodër and Gjirokastër, and begun providing support to affected families through the distribution of 180 food packs and 180 hygiene kits.

While conditions have stabilised in several areas following a temporary pause in rainfall, Durrës remains critically affected, with many homes and streets still underwater due to drainage system challenges, and Islamic Relief Albania continues to prioritise emergency assistance for affected families in the area.
