{"id":1440,"date":"2016-11-11T15:57:30","date_gmt":"2016-11-11T07:57:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/islamic-relief.org.my\/sandbox_www\/?p=1440"},"modified":"2017-04-21T16:35:07","modified_gmt":"2017-04-21T08:35:07","slug":"millions-in-malawi-go-hungry-following-poor-harvests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/islamic-relief.org.my\/sandbox_www\/millions-in-malawi-go-hungry-following-poor-harvests\/","title":{"rendered":"Millions in Malawi go hungry following poor harvests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]<span style=\"color: #000000;\">More than 6 million people in Malawi need humanitarian aid following the effects of El Nino.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Reduced rainfall and above average temperatures in Malawi have left 40% of the country hungry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Female subsistence farmers are most vulnerable as they don\u2019t always have access to land or equipment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Meliya Beka is one of 9,080 people in Chikwawa District, Malawi, to receive a three-month food pack from Islamic Relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">She said: \u201cThis year I tried to plant drought-resistant millet but still I am empty-handed.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI did not harvest a single bag of food. Sometimes I think that if I had a man, he would at least know what to do.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u201cI go into the bush and look for wild tubers to cook for the children when they come back from school. If I don\u2019t find any we go to bed hungry.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In Meliya\u2019s district 90% of the rural population are at risk of food insecurity and in the areas Islamic Relief is reaching out to (including Traditional Authority Chapananga, where Meliya lives) 39,720 people are currently food insecure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Islamic Relief is supporting women farmers by equipping them with sustainable irrigation systems, training, animal husbandry and fish farming.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text]More than 6 million people in Malawi need humanitarian aid following the effects of El Nino.
