In Nugal Region of Puntland State, Somalia thousands of people have been displaced from their homes and forced to move elsewhere. This is due to the devastating drought in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.
The displaced people have formed makeshift camps where they hope to get assistance. Most IDP camps have not received any assistance and people are forced to buy basic things including water. The camps also lack sanitation facilities, exposing the people there to risk of disease outbreaks.
Most of the people in this area are pastoralists and the drought has had a devastating effect on their livestock, the main source of livelihood. Many people have lost more than half their animals and the surviving ones are very weak.
A team from Islamic Relief visited Usgure and HajiKhayr Villages of Nugal Region of Puntland to assess the drought impact.
7.1 million people in Somalia are currently facing food insecurity and the numbers are expected to grow by the end of the year. Islamic Relief is on the ground assessing the situation.
